Remembering Sly Stone
A sincere tribute to Sly Stone, a man whose music changed the game for soul, funk, and rock. I didn’t plan to make this video, but just as I was about to drop this newsletter, I heard the news of his passing. So I hit record. Off the cuff. From the heart.
I first heard There’s a Riot Goin’ On after leaving California and moving to Spain with my band American Gypsy.
That record changed the game for us. It rewired how we approached the music. Later, while living in Amsterdam, we jammed with a visiting U.S. band—one of the musicians turned out to be Rusty Allen, who told us he was about to take over for Larry Graham as Sly’s new bass player. That moment brought it all full circle.
🕊️ Much love and respect to Sly Stone. You mattered.
